I can still see this on 2.6.20-8-generic. And it's still being fixed
upstream http://bughost.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1096 , so I don't
see this a fixed released. Am i missing something ? Because booting with
kill switch off still hangs on my Thinkpad T60.

The "underlining" you speak of is when the ATI drivers fail to load 3d
hardware acceleration support. When you fixed your acceleration, by
disabling AIGLX support, the underlining went away.
