I was able to reproduce the problem using the latest testing live CD. The only actions I did after the desktop appeared were: (1) change the resolution (shouldn't be relevant) (2) changed the theme to "glider" (3) moved the mouse pointer over a desktop menu item (System). The item gets highlighted
