I had this problem updating initramfs-tools from another repository
which I had to add to get some packages needed in my job. I had to
enable the other 'backports' and 'multiverse' repositories.
Since it is written in sources.list these repositories does not receive
security updates from Ubuntu, I

I forgot to say I only use Ubuntu in this machine and I don't have
menu.lst in /boot/grub/.

It is impossible, because when I get into the initiramfs console, I
can't use sudo and update-grub also. I am replying this thread from Live
CD.

Actually, I have the same problem and before I got that, I have updated
the initramfs package from the Update Manager. I think this update
screws the whole system and shows a deceitful message related to Glib.
