@PJO: While I see your problem, it isn't really what this bug report is
about. This report is about a potential problem with the handling of dsa
keys specifically.
If you have an issue with the dokumentation, file a bug report against
ubuntu-docs. That way the right people will (hopefully) see it.
I agree that closing this bug seemed a bit premature.
@Kamus: Closing bugs, without solving them, is not necessarily a goal in
itself. If you think there are information missing, ask some follow up
questions.

For a configuration files (among others) to be recreated at reinstall
the original package need to be purge. The file /etc/mysql/my.cnf belong
to the package mysql-common. Hence you want to purge the package mysql-
common and then reinstall.
Does that help?
** Changed in: mysql-dfsg-5.0 (Ubuntu)
Your attached DpkgTerminalLog.txt shows plenty of lines saying:
Warning: World-writable config file '/etc/mysql/my.cnf' is ignored
Does setting proper permissions, such as 644, on said file
/etc/mysql/my.cnf fix your problem?

Yes, the part about Karmic sounds like a reasonable explanation. Marking
report as invalid.
