after some testing it seems not related to X nor the kernel, as logging
remotely via ssh and killing alarm-clock recovers the system from the
lock.

I wonder if the freeze is at all levels or only at your X session.

hmmppf, it wasn't caused by mesa. The update was applied 04/10, the bug
was reported 04/08 and the symptoms around 04/01
but xserver-common, xserver-xorg-core and related packages were
installed from 04/01

[i965GM gma3100] X freezes when mythtv idle 10 min, since Apr 1st
i've downgraded, waiting for the freeze to happen (about 24 hours ago i
had 2 freezes, just a few hours i had another one, so at least tomorrow
night will report back)

@Michael, just tested at Jaunty and it compiles fine and the module can
be loaded. I cannot test if the webcam actually works as i don't have
the hardware.
I tried with Hardy and you're right is not compiling there.
However, as this module is deprecated i'll suggest to check the bug
#120434 as
