Confirmed that ncpfs is indeed broken on karmic i386, but working on
karmic amd64. The workaround of installing the old package does work,
but obviously doesn't solve the underlying problem. Thus this bug
should not be considered "fixed" until i386 is fixed as well.

broke LDAP auth, due to the certificate chain no longer validating).
The quick fix was to set TLS_REQCERT to allow in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf,
but that is just a temporary workaround.
