This just started happening on my machine within the past day.
On Intrepid x86_64 with some ATI integrated card, when X starts while my
laptop is connected to my TV (with s-video), the laptop freezes, leaving
me with a solid black screen.
If I boot without the tv connected, then use amdcccle to

Public bug reported:
When start Xorg on my laptop (using fglrx drivers), while it is
connected to a TV, the screen gets blacked out. When this happens, I am
able to move to the console (screen still completely black) and log in
blind.
I also have tried sending output to the TV after loging in.

Ok, I purged the ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 packages,
then deleted the remaining files in /etc. I reinstalled those packages
and configured them for my card, and it worked the next time I booted.
So it seems like this is some issue with upgrading and the
configuration.

I am having the same problem (with an atheros card that isn't supported
by madwifi yet). This is after upgrading to 2.6.22-9-generic. It was
working with the previous version, so the issue seems to be with the
upgrade.
