I have the same problem after applying some updates from 12.04 LTS to
12.10. It is really annoying and I'm tempted to try out other OS's.

I'm having the same problem with my SD card reader. It actually doesn't
allow my system to shutdown or restart when I have it inserted into my
laptop. When I hard boot it, it freezes at the Gateway logo screen with
the SD card inserted. It doesn't move from that screen.
