Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 22.04 LTS to 24.04 LTS, we noticed that our monit service
failed to start.
We expected "sudo systemctl status monit" to show that the daemon is running,
but instead we got:-

Started monit.service - Pro-active monitoring utility for unix systems.
monit.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
monit.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.

Our machine has monit version 1:5.33.0-2build2

We figured out a workaround by altering this line in the
"/usr/lib/systemd/system/monit.service" file:-

ProtectHome=yes

When we changed this to "ProtectHome=read-only", monit then started as
expected under systemd.

** Affects: monit (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
