Was the result of an upgrade from 13.04. Everything went ok and after the reboot when I tried to install some extra packages with synaptic, the dependency problems appeared. Had to manually purge the older libboost packages before I was able to install the 53 version. After this everything looks

OK - after guessing the actual package names of the missing depends, got the latest hplip to install and after editing /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat as per instructions above (then re-connecting device) scan functions. Will leave the packaging of a newer hplip to the experts! Thanks
