I tested the patch today on a number of computers running in the computer LAB
at the Unuversity of Iceland. The patch really solves the problem.

the ipconfig program reports that it is giving up at each timeout, when it has

Some research showed that the file was actually installed:
/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so
Manual run showed that it was actually the googleearth application that
prevented the installation.

In my case lxterminal also died silently. Strace showed that it was due to a
stale socet that for me had become read only.
I solved it by removing the socet:
sudo rm /tmp/.lxterminal-socket:0.0-*
