I'm facing similar problems on Karmic and Lucid. Just another observation- this seems to be a problem in other distros too. I've sen this problem with Mandriva 2010.0 and Opensuse 11.2. Opensuse 11.2 does not use KMS, but initializes the framebuffer and uses splashy to provide the graphical boot. M
