Sorry it took so long to get back, can only really look at this issue at
the weekends.
I have changed from the open source ATI driver to the propriety one, and
the symptoms are slightly different, but the problem remains.
This time, when I press Ctrl-Alt-F2, I can log in and restart safely.

It looks like gwibber isn't removing the account properly from couchdb.
As a work around you can:
# go to file:///home/anthony/.local/share/desktop-couch/couchdb.html
# log-in
# go to gwibber-accounts
# select the account that should be deleted
# click on Delete Document
Then you should be able

processor unfortunately doesn't have virtualisation extensions. I can
run a VM on a different machine and try from there.

Ah sorry, I thought you only tried it in Karmic.
If it's working for you in Jaunty and Karmic, then it seems more likely
that it is an issue where the hardware setup is affecting the software,

I formatted an external hard drive using gparted. After shutting down and then
restarting the laptop, rEFIt couldn't find Ubuntu. It just showed a Legacy OS
option which loaded to a screen that said Missing Operating System.

I've recently started programming in python and none of my apps or my
trubogears site have frozen.
I'm using edgy with a 2Ghz Athlon + 512mb RAM.
