Today I've tried with the last intrepid alpha6 livecd, the problem is
steel here.
Making some more investigation seem to be related to the failure on the
display detection.
with the external monitor attached the xresprobe command output:

Ahm, with Ubuntu 8.04 and previews version, the problem didn't appear.

in gutsy using:

if you try to install qgis and qgis-grass-plugin you can't do so because
I solved installing the nvidia driver from the nvidia installer (I used
the lastest usable non-legacy driver). Be sure to delete all the nvidia
related package and the linux-restrincted-module-(generic i386 ...) I
think that the previews problem is that the legacy driver is too old!
