the issue.
Though, now the NVIDIA driver does not work for me. I haven't had a chance
to dig in on yet. Perhaps a reinstall of the driver would fix it.

Remove ubuntu-desktop with "apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop". (You'd probably
need to do this while you are in a non-gnome desktop.) Then run the upgrade.

It happened to me as well with Lucid beta 2 on amd64.
Following is after the update manager restores the original state:
$ dpkg -l ubuntu-desktop
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
