Ok, I think I found what the problem was. I tried to see if I would have
the same problem in Hardy. So I added the applet in the panel and I got
the nice dialog attached. So in my main ubuntu installation I probably
forgot about this dialog or missed it somehow. When I went and enabled
auto competi
I'm not using desktop effects. My gusty also was clean installed, if it
makes any difference.
A correction on my previous post: The textbox is NOT grayed out I first
though. It just can't get the focus, so that I can start typing in it.

Ouaou this is a really old version that we have at debian then. If I
can't get any of the greek debian developers to do it, I'm gone try and
make the package my self.

Well, the Greek Debian developers can be found here:

apparently. I have talked to markos and he is not in a mood right now to
make a new version. I haven't talked to the other two.

The themes from GNOME seem to use the alias Sans (I check with gdm-2.17.6) .
Its just the edgy/feisty gdm theme that doesn't use the alias but uses
"Bitstream Vera Sans Bold" instead.
Replaces "Bitstream Vera Sans" with "Sans".

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. The key for hiding and
showing tilda can be changed by right clicking tilda -> Preferences ->
Keybindings. I edited the bug description to reflect that a gui exists
for editing the default key.
I agree with you that None+F1 is not a good default key.

The bug persists in Ubuntu 6.10 as well . I tried it with evolution
2.8.1-0ubuntu4 and the behavior is the same with what is described
above.
Additionally now, when right clicking an English misspelled word (with
Edit ->current languages -> Greek selected), a "Greek" menu entry
appears and suggest

I can also confirm this bug for Edgy and with sun's jre 1.6.0-rc-b103.
Checked with someone using fedora6 and sun jre 1.5 and he doesn't have
