I got this problem when I tried to wake the screen (running on a Presario V6000, nVidia GeForce Go chipset) I restarted the X server (loosing some data) and found that compiz crashed when I logged back in. I can reproduce this reliably if it'll be a help to anyone...just tell me what you need.
