I dont know about that as i didnt have this machine prior to ubuntu
12.04. I installed a clean installation on this machine as prior to this
i was running a laptop so the issue didnt arise.

Ok tested with the absolute newest one i could find as mentioned
previously
The machine would not boot at all and hung with the text prompt. Had to
reboot and change grub selection to get it working

for alsa for the current kernel release so tying:
apt-get update will just tell me there is no binary for this.
in view of this i downloaded the sources from the alsa project to build the
kernel module snd_hda_intel and
Pulse shows the device as being dummy output as does the sound settings
in system settings
i have spent all today checking my machine and from what i can detect
the use of udev to detect the device is where the issue is as udev does
not recognise the sound card?
thats why i compiled and loaded
I'm not sure what you mean by:
found there is no driver module for alsa for the current kernel release
The driver is named snd-hda-intel and it was already loaded.
as i stated previously i downloaded the sources and compiled the driver
snd-hda-intel as the binary cannot come from the ubuntu
