OK have investigated this further and found there is no driver module for alsa for the current kernel release so tying: apt-get update will just tell me there is no binary for this. in view of this i downloaded the sources from the alsa project to build the kernel module snd_hda_intel and

Pulse shows the device as being dummy output as does the sound settings in system settings i have spent all today checking my machine and from what i can detect the use of udev to detect the device is where the issue is as udev does not recognise the sound card? thats why i compiled and loaded
