I'm having this issue as well. I just tried the following mainline
kernel per the instructions above and the symptoms are the same.

(I had this problem mid 13.04 as well, but didn't spend

After successfully doing the gutsy to hardy dist-upgrade (I used the old
debian manual method instead of update-manager -d if that makes a
difference?), the system dropped me into a root shell as it couldn't
find superblocks in my lvm storage pools.

I'm seeing this now too. Worked perfectly under Edgy (and Dapper before
that).
