This seems to be fixed in Quantal (12.10). I didn't configure any
workaround and the brightness adjustment feels snappy after upgrading to
12.10.

Title:
I occasionally have similar symptoms on my Dell E6420 with Sandy Bridge
graphics.
As a workaround, it helps to log in via console or ssh and kill the screensaver
process.

I did have the same problem on my Dell M1330 running Jaunty (with nvidia
180.44), which was upgraded all the way from Gutsy. The fan was very
noisy, starting and stopping very often. GPU temperature was high
nevertheless.
There was no problem while still running Intrepid (BIOS A12).

For me, the PPA package from a few days ago absolutely fixed the
problem.
Before the update, cca. 1 in 20 tries were OK, and since the update it
was OK every single connection (I tried it probably around 30 times).

If you added option snd-hda-intel model=3stack to /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base in Gutsy (as proposed in some places and working for me) and
do an upgrade to Hardy, you have to remove that option again to make the

As soon as I stop X/kdm, tf-tool --acquire works.

I was also hit by this bug. Together with a non-working EVMS (see bug
#124641), it really gave me a hard time after upgrading my server...
For me, the workaround was to uninstall the EVMS package and manually
put in a startup script to detect the VGs, as panos lined out in the
comment above.
