In the Gnome and Unity desktop environments, xdg-open calls gvfs-open with the URL. However this is broken in the current version (1.24.1): see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=738690 The patch has been in master since May 2015, but it looks like Ubuntu's gvfs package is lagging behind.
