I have resolved this. Yeah, it surprised me too. I had to completely
purge all of nvidia-glx and associated components from my system. This
is how I did it.
Shut down gdm, or kdm if appropriate
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
at black screen, go to login
ctrl + alt + f1
login at this po
I apparently shouldn't have assigned this to someone. Please help
still.

Also, while the Nvidia X Server recognizes the default screen resolution
for the Sceptre monitor, it is not an option when changing the screen
resolution.

I think I selected the right package as I am using Nvidia Graphics Driver
version 177. This is running a Nvidia Gforce 8200 on board Video card that
outputs via HDMI to a SceptreX22WG-Gamer flat panel monitor. I also have just
upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10.
