The problem seems to have sorted itself. I got the same message when I
tried again from a fresh boot to ensure nothing else was loading. On
rebooting the firmware had been installed, and the wifi controller now
works.

sometimes when I boot up, the screen stays black. Only the mouse cursor
works, and control-alt-f1 gives a useable screen. Rebooting from there
usually gives me a clean bootup, but sometimes it takes several efforts.

When i click on the dash icon, it opens very slowly, the whole screen flickers
with colour aberrations, as if the video driver was corrupt. It only happens
with dash, and clears instantly I shut dash down.
I am using 14.04, and this problem only happened in the last few days
