My system is back in operation. I flashed the BIOS (3 times- 3rd time
with the LiveCD using the 'flashrom' utility) and the installation
worked. My clue was the assigment of my main drive to SDB instead of
SDA. It seems the BIOS or some setting was odd.
The only remaining issue is the maximum

I decided to upgrade my current 10.04LTS to 10.10. The upgrade went fairly well
and is currently running. No issues to report.
While trhis solves my 10.04LTS issues, it seems other have similar
problems. The upgrade seems to be a good solution.

Thank you again. It seems to have mostly worked. Another file error
occurred. Another clean, update, upgrade procedure fixed this.
Unfortunately:
-now the 'left-handed' mouse buttons do not work
-I have no pull-down menu
-I can't resize any of the working windows
-Some applications (update

I finally completed an update to 10.10, but the upgrade got interrupted
as the system froze. Rebooting did not work as a number of updates did
not complete. I used the safe (hold shift key down) method and got the
system to fix the broken packages. This kept asking for the 'Alpha
AMD64' cd which I
I tried to upgrade to the latest kernel but either I'm not doing it
