My system is back in operation. I flashed the BIOS (3 times- 3rd time with the LiveCD using the 'flashrom' utility) and the installation worked. My clue was the assigment of my main drive to SDB instead of SDA. It seems the BIOS or some setting was odd. The only remaining issue is the maximum

Public bug reported: Initial install worked for a few months. Updated first week of January from update manager. Video settings changed to only allow up to 1024 X 768 resolution. removed drivers from additional drivers screen, rebooted and reinstalled. Resolution changed to maximum 640 X 480.
