I can get my data now through ecryptfs-recover. Perhaps the README that
gets created should reference this rather than mount-private?
Still would like to be able to reuse the partition rather than have to
wipe it to upgrade, that's the main issue.

My ununtu desktop failed to boot one day, saying "no init found". I could not
get past this, including going back to previous configurations.
So I downloaded the latest version, burned a CD and tried to install that.
Booting from the CD is OK, but I can't get my old user data
