I figured out that this failure mode happens when the hostname of the server/node/instance that you're installing on is not resolvable. Simply adding the hostname to /etc/hosts (or DNS, etc.) will resolve this issue. -- package rabbitmq-server 1.7.2-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess
