I found in the NVidia forums where it has been asked and the answer is
that audio over HDMI is NOT currently supported in the NVidia Linux
drivers and it may be supported sometime in the future.

I can confirm that I too have this issue with no audio over HDMI on the
Abit AN-M2HD (ALC883). It seems as if the hardware is being detected
properly as far as I can tell, just no sound is coming through.
