Further testing indicates that it is purely a burning issue; playback on
DVD is good, can rip from DVD drive to avi file - however, still getting
the same error when attempting to burn. Hope this helps!

Here is the relevant line from using strace on seahorse-tool on the
command-line:

The problem is that it doesn't sound "normal" and "safe". :p
I haven't got this problem with Dapper neither with other distro's.

When a laptop uses battery power, he should choose one of the lower
aticonfig power states (if you are using the fglrx video card driver).
For the moment the GPU is still using 100% of it's strength (I have to
manually choose another power state). This should be integrated in
