Another update.
The idle=poll option was more of a power hog than I realized. I actually
ended up going back to nolapic a few days after I used it. After the
electricity ran out much, MUCH faster than it should have.
The most recent thing I looked into is the max cstate options.

that with nolacpic only 1 core works.

I decided to try them all and see the effects. It went like this:
* acpi=off - Works, but looks terrible, trackpad doesnt work, keyboard spams
keys randomly
Sorry for the delay. My laptop was away for a while getting repaired.
Apparently water magically appeared on the GPUs and the mobo. Allowing
the repair to cost me instead of the manufacturer. Lovely :-/

even get to the point where I could load a package. It may be with the
kernel itself. How would I know for sure?

Having the exact same issue OOTB with Kubuntu 10.04. Tried changing the
snd-hda-intel to model=auto and a few other variations with no success
on getting the jack to output sound.

I have had this problem all through my use of Karmic (my external device
is a Thecus N2200 NAS, sharing files across the network via SAMBA).
I wanted to add the comment that just tonight I did a fresh install of
Lucid Lynx 10.04 BETA. The problem is still present.

By putting file_mode and dir_mode you're setting your own mount
permissions, just try nounix to prevent the system from over-riding it.
