I'm happy to help with testing if needed. I have just built an i7-2600k
attached to a 2560x1600 monitor. I am running Debian unstable, which
should be close enough to Ubuntu for testing purposes.
Since people are saying the tearing is worse at higher resolutions, I
thought I'd offer my screen.

Chris - sshd kept working because it re-execs itself when doing auth.
This means it got the new libpam.so and was able to dlopen pam_env.so
without the symbol version mismatch.
