I was able to resolve this problem by setting
HandleLidSwitch=ignore
in /etc/systemd/logind.conf
It appears to be a similar issue that was discussed in the following

The laptop boots without any issue when it is not connected to the
docking station. However when it's connected to the docking and I try to
boot it, I get a black screen shortly after the Kubuntu icon shows
during the booting process.
To boot the laptop, I have to disconnect
I notice that libreoffice doesn't create a .libreoffice directory in my
home directory. could the problem of not been able to add libreoffice
extensions relate to this?
