I have working fan control using this page to get fan control working in the first place: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=836958
and once I could use 'full-speed' to set the fan speed I moved on to thinkfan. Using thinkfan I just have the max heat level set at "level disengaged" (in quotes), and everything is working perfectly.
