repository (ppa http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu
lucid main) while having previously installed kde4.

I suspect the name as being at fault because after two or three times of
trying to create a folder named "misc" (quotes not part of name), I gave
up and, instead, renamed the "untitled folder" to "other". I.e., it
successfully created the folder

This is Hard Heron, Kubuntu, LiveDVD, release version.
When booting from a DVD or live DVD, the DVD drive is /dev/sda. When
booting normally the hard drive is /dev/sda. As a result, attempting to
install, I theorize, attempts to install grub to the DVD...which fails.
