I've just experienced the same story as Mr. Bruno Nova (brunonova). I
spent a whole day to shoot the trouble and identified that it's about
.Xauthority.
I tracked the /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log and looked into my
.Xauthority. I found it contained two entries:
snow/unix:1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 f8
brasero hangs with "converting video file to mpeg2" message for any type
of video sources. (amd64 ubuntu12.04)

Hi, I think it's the same thing in Bug #987220, which I've just posted two
comments for it:
#47 and #48.
Such hang has a very high probability to occur. (more than 90% on those
6 laptops I recently installed.)

In addition, the ubuntu 12.04 installation iso (i386 or amd64) can't
shutdown either:
I put the iso in a flash drive: boot by grub4dos, fat32 fs, with casper-
rw to save changes.

I installed this ubuntu 10.10(i386) in an AMD64 box A. Looking OK, but
10 days later, it crashed often, 1-3 times per day. I wonder if the
board is faulty, and moved the disks to another AMD64 box B (completely
