I have just tried the simple fix shown above:
sudo sed -i 's/HP (HPLIP)/HP/' /usr/share/ppd/hplip/*
The result is:

My printer does not print since I upgraded Ubuntu to 18.04.1 about 10
October 2018.
I have followed advice in over 30 emails from several guys using ubuntu-users
list without success.
The error "Filter failed" keeps appearing.
I am a retired end user of Ubuntu since 2004, but still do not know

Confirmed with a 4,2 Macbook Air. Thankfully I have a trackball in hand
most of the time, but this is definitely the biggest drawback I've
encountered so far since switching from OS X a couple of days ago.

promising:
