I figured out the problem to be with apparmor: I added the following to /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld network inet stream, network inet6 stream, network inet dgram, network inet6 dgram, Then executed: /etc/init.d/apparmor force-reload /etc/init.d/mysql restart ...an mysql started up fine.
