Sorry to resurrect an old issue, but I've just come across the same (or
very similar-looking) problem. I'm also on an Openstack Swift storage
node with lots of small writes to SSDs as in the OP, running on Debian
Stretch in our case with the following kernel:

Dropbox stopped loading automatically and wouldn't load manually either.
So, I removed it with:
sudo apt-get purge dropbox
and then removed no longer needed dependencies with:
sudo apt-get autoremove
I restarted my computer and then tried reinstalling dropbox with:
sudo
I can't remove notify-osd since I'm using a multi-user machine, and some
of the users are using other desktop environments. How does the dbus
magic work, and can it be turned into correctly-working magic?

This is fixed in later releases of XMLTV. If anyone is interested in
providing a backport for Hardy, I can help if necessary (I don't
currently have the free time to prepare it myself). On the other hand,
Hardy is due for Desktop EOL next April…

The new build-dep that's not in Ubuntu (liblinux-dvb-perl, I assume) is
only required for the tv_grab_it_dvb grabber, so an alternative would be
to disable this grabber (comment it out in Makefile.PL remove from the
.install file) and remove the build-dep.

I think we've finally managed to put together a workaround for this
problem. While there is still a bug in Date::Manip, it only occurs when
expressing timezones as numerical offsets (e.g. +). I've patched
xmltv so that it never uses invokes Date::Manip with timezones in that
format.

I have reopened this bug, as I don't believe it has been fixed, so
should never have been closed in the first place. The bug is still open
in Debian Lenny, and no-one's decided to randomly close it there.
The steps to reproduce it are so simple, I'm sure someone who has access
to an Ubuntu 9.04
They're still present in the source for historical reasons. However,
they are no longer installed as they no longer work.
