Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
1.) The main issue is that gnome power manager still cannot adjust
brightness of LCD screen on Asus U80A laptop. Whether using function
keys or gnome power manager, it shows adjustments but brightness level
doesn't change.

After a time the slider becomes locked to the applet but I can
duplicate the random appearance of the slider across the screen if I
remove and then readd the widget

I can report this bug is also present in Ubuntu 10.04 beta2. Tried
setting
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux
Which was suggest in some other bug reports I read but nothing fixed it.

I've also had my Atheros device disappear recently. Worked fine Sat,
installed updates, restarted, put to sleep and then woke up yesterday
and wireless device was gone. modprobe of ath5k does nothing, hardware
switch does nothing

Freshly installed Ubuntu 8.10 on HP Pavilion 6745us. System hangs both
during boot from CD for install, as well as after install and requires a
keyboard button to be pressed 15-20 times for system to fully boot.
Afterwards, system works fine. Did not have issue on same laptop
