Installed new kernel on my jaunty setup:

1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through

I tried the opposite approach this morning and ENABLED KMS in jaunty
with the 2.6.31-9.29 kernel by following these instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting. I was able to boot and log
in successfully, but the sound is not working correctly. It is behaving

I installed 2.6.31-6.29 on my jaunty install, but I'm back to having the
same problem as in Antonio's comment #53 -- it seems that gdm freezes
and the whole machine is unresponsive (ie, can't alt-f1 to get text-mode
prompt). I tried disabling KMS in grub by adding nomodeset to the
kernel's boot
