I had limited success today with iwconfig in the terminal. I used:

iwconfig eth1 essid CatChat rate 54M mode Managed channel 11
/code
(even though iwlist scan says that the ap is Master) this gave me access for
the longest period of time that i've had (15 minutes) and instead of dropping

Steps:
1. Open a new, fresh terminal.
2. type in a command such as: sudo nautilus (w/o quotes of course)
3. it asks for your password, but actually the cursor

also, yes I am using NetworkManager however this also occurs with the
built in System | Administration | Network
