I cannot confirm this on an Asus G1S-A1 laptop (Gutsy, x86-64).
/var/log/acpid accumulates less than 3k per week on this model, despite
intensive use.
However, I do see bug 59695 regardless.
I think that we have to be careful with pinpointing a single source for
the hard drive problems. If it is

I get numbers similar to karlbowden on an Asus G1S-A1 laptop with AC
connected, for a Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00. After 3 months of use the load
cycle count is already up to 65,000, so I agree that the bug should be
marked as critical.

The problem also started appearing on my laptop on kernel 2.6.22-14. The
posted fix works fine for me on a GeForce 8600M GT in 1024x768
(vga=0x317). I put vesafb first in the modules file, followed by fbcon.
Not sure if that makes a difference.

I can confirm this on gutsy. I run my system clock on Eastern European

The latest gutsy kernel packages solved at least some of these problems
for me. On a first glance, the REPLY_ADD_STA messages are gone, and one

If I select some text in Lyx, hit Ctrl-C, and then mash the keyboard, it
does become a tad faster - scrolling through the tutorial with PgDown
takes 17 seconds instead of 22 in the latest Gutsy-installed version.

Sorry about the late response; I was out of town.
I can no longer reproduce the problem, despite the missing libGL.a.
Apparently, libGL.so is sufficient, and it could have been a simple
ldconfig problem that cleared up at the next reboot. For what it is
worth, I am using envy with the NVidia drive

This is odd. Please test on your Nvidia card and report back when you
get a chance.
I currently use a self-compiled version of LyX 1.4, and scrolling is
fast there. I will try to compile LyX 1.5 myself and see what happens.

For what it is worth: With the latest upgrades, if I have openoffice-kde
installed on AMD64, the program hangs with 100% CPU. If I deinstall
openoffice-kde, the application works fine. I did NOT need to install
openoffice-gnome.
