Not a long term fix but just proposing this as this saved me from not
booting in pop_os! 21.10.
Disable either the trackpad or trackpoint in BIOS. I disabled my
trackpoint and I am able to boot again.
Just so that other users who end up here have some temporary workaround,
as to update the kernel

I also agree with the previous two posts.
If we have to stop using the system tray icon, what does Canonical
suggest we should use?
I can only think of splitting the application into two parts. A service
and a UI with the UI managing the service.
This might be big changes and add up on the cost
