well, since it refers to old hardware - so old that i haven't played
with it for a long time - i think, this can be closed.
for a correct solution, we should try a recent ubuntu on that system
again ... is this necessary?

Binary package hint: base-installer
Text-mode-installer does not correctly detect BIOS-order for IDE-controllers.
It creates entries in fstab and boot/menu.lst for hde, instead of hda.
Afer booting live-cd and adapting these two files, the error was corrected and
the system
some more details ...
