I apparently still get this bug in lxcfs `2.0.8-0ubuntu1~16.04.2`. This

In my case, a seemingly plain-vanilla, straightforward upgrade from
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on Ubuntu-supported hardware (leo1 from System76) to
Ubuntu 12.04 resulted in an inability to boot into anything more than
GRUB, and also (once the system was booted) no DNS.
I detail my successful fix, and the

What Happened:
a) I upgraded from a perfectly-working 9.10 to 10.04 using the Update
Manager, taking all defaults.
b) I restarted the machine.
c) The machine would not complete boot, staying at the boot screen.
