I've not selected any style from the preferences-dialog (maybe because I
can't find this setting), but after looking the installed packages I've
noticed that no one of openoffice.org-style* packages were installed.
Now I've installed these packages and finally always works fine. But my
question
Is not a bug, this problem raise when an appropriate openoffice.org-
style* package is missing.
But maybe we have to investigate why the package that contains the
default style is not installed by default on Edgy Eft.

I have a P4 at 2.4 GHz with 1GB of RAM and 150 GB of free disk space.
Gnome freezes and if I switch to a terminal, it freezes when prompting
for the password.

No, only the standard logging information.
The computer doesn't crash, but it freezes completely. Even if I press
Ctrl+Alt+Del it doesn't restart, I must power off the computer.

I have the same problem on Edgy: the only way to update my system is
through Synapatic or with apt-get
