I manually removed /var/lib/mysql folder.. then
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get update
mysql server and client 5.5 the installed successfuly
folloewd by mysql work bench

As nothing was received from running ubuntu-bug `pidof compiz` I think
that on crashing my network also was disabled. Also when choosing "keep"
instead of "upload" the tmp folder suggested was not created.
Further... If I log in at the start as Guest everything works as
expected.

Hi !.
I reported some time ago now that this problem was cured by un-ticking
"nvidia" in the startup group. Since removing it from the start-up
action no further problem. The problem still occurs with natty if I
allow nvidia in the start up, which obviously I no longer do.

It is now 31/1/11 , even after all suggested updates have been installed the
problem still exists. I have noted an occasional nvidia logo screen appear
briefly at start up (not often). I have also had the start-up work perfectly at
times.
I noticed that nvidia X server settings were included in
SORRY--- A number of updates installed 18/11/2010 resulting in a return
of the original problem and workaround

Thanks for the interest, I am using 10.10 now. I so rarely use windows
these days I had forgotten I had disabled the com ports.
However having re-enabled com1, com2 and lpt1 windows xp now starts
normally.

Just updated from ubuntu8.10 to ubuntu 9.04 which included openoffice2 to open
office 3. Saving any spreadsheets worked fine before update. Now a dialog box
says "unable to be written" when spreadsheet has been modified eg a chart added.
