Sorry, forgot to post back. I'm not having this issue any more, either
because of a batch of updates, or else switching to a single static gdm
theme that I know works. I'm not sure where the problem came from, but
it seems to be resolved now, at least for me.

I have been, yes. I think it was due to a buggy gdm theme, but I can't
be sure, because I haven't rebooted since I removed it. I'll post back
when I've figured it out.

I'm using Fiesty Herd 5 x86_64, which I've dist-upgrade'd to from Edgy.
gdm crashes just about every other time it's run, it crashes before even
showing a login prompt, so all I get is a spinning cursor and black
screen. The bug reporter tool hopefull
