I am having the same issue.
Hybrid card Nvidia 9300M and a Notebook Vaio VGN-Z570FN.
I am also having a "Ghost" Screen and a Black background when I log in.

On a fresh install of Karmic Koala x64 ( 9.10 ), with the alternate
install.
The system will not start due to a ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/-
--xx$ does not exist .

*Edit the fstab to use the device instead the uuid.
*edit the grub.
