This appears related to whether the menu is show by default or not, and
only affects the first instance of the terminal. Subsequent terminal
instances open at the correct size, regardless of menu.
Also, this affects xfce4-terminal, and in fact, only the first instance
of either gnome-terminal or

not being set correctly or being reset upon logout. Maybe the two bugs are
related, and I do experience both, but this bug

I have the same problem with my WD My Book Home Edition 1TB (using Firewire
connection) on Jaunty.
sdparm --command=stop /dev/sdf just causes the drive light to flicker but it
continues spinning.
The same thing happens when unmounting from the desktop except that
sometimes, 10 minutes or so
