Dino99: What do you mean "fixed now"?
I just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 last night 10/28/12 and the problem
still exists. LibreOffice is unusable without removing libreoffice-gtk
then it's UGLY!
What is your fix and when will it be part of updates?

update-kernel works but only if menu.lst is renamed or deleted first. Below
are
1) menu.lst after upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 before editing
2) menu.lst after upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 after editing
3) menu.

After 4 days of fighting the sound problem in 9.10 Daniel T Chen noticed
that my kernel was old. The 9.10 update installed
vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic but didn't edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. Adding
the kernel by manually editing the new kernel fixed my sound problems.

Manually editing /boot/grub/menu.lst fixed the sound problem. Is the automated
update going to be fixed so this isn't necessary? A lot of people are going to
experience the same problem and aren't experie

Thank you. I had suspicions about the kernel after reading bug reports all
weekend. As a linux novice I'm at a loss about which kernel is correct and how
to load the correct kernel.

Public bug reported:
Not the hardware, worked fine in 8.x and 9.04. 9.10 breaks sound. Even
"System," "Preferences," "Sound" fails waiting for a sound card response.
